The most appropriate materials for making treads, risers, baseboards, and footers of a staircase are stone materials such as marble, granite, and terrazzo. The choice of material and finish should be guided by both stylistic and functional factors: in fact, an exterior staircase may have different weather resistance and hardness requirements than an interior one.
